India’s electric mobility transformation is reshaping transportation beyond passenger cars. Over ten years, EV sales skyrocketed from about 50,000 units in 2016 to 2.3 million in 2025, marking a 46-fold increase. Two-wheelers and three-wheelers are leading the shift, offering affordability and practicality that make them popular with both individual and commercial buyers. This surge in EV adoption is transforming the sector, delivering economic, energy, and environmental benefits as the transition gains momentum.
Government strategies boosting the EV surge
The FAME India Scheme, launched in 2015, has been instrumental in driving the EV boom. The initiative provided buyer incentives, supported charging infrastructure development, and encouraged domestic production. The first phase operated through March 2019, followed by Phase II until April 2024. Throughout, the government focused on reducing upfront costs, enabling local production, and building the necessary charging networks. These steps created the foundation for a thriving electric mobility ecosystem in India.
The FAME India Scheme is just part of the government's broader strategy. By 2026, India had become a producer of complete EV component systems, including battery packs, motors, drivetrains, and charging equipment. This development has attracted global manufacturers seeking to capitalize on India’s growing cost-competitive production environment. The country is now transitioning from being an EV market to a key player in the global EV supply chain.
Infrastructure growth and export achievements
To support the rise in EVs, India expanded its charging infrastructure rapidly. As of July 2026, 52,718 public charging stations were in place, including 16,561 fast chargers. These stations are spread across major cities and key highways, ensuring convenient access for EV users. Companies are now installing ultra-fast charging stations, cutting charging time and boosting adoption. This infrastructure growth is vital to maintaining the shift and addressing concerns like range anxiety.
India’s EV industry is also gaining international traction. EV exports soared from USD 1.2 million in 2020 to USD 84 million in 2024, with key markets in Nepal, Indonesia, and Japan. This growth shows India’s rising role in the global EV market and highlights the quality and competitiveness of its manufacturing.
India’s electric mobility path forward
The National Mission on Manufacturing, introduced in 2025, identifies EVs as a priority for innovation and industrial growth. With goals to boost manufacturing’s GDP contribution, create jobs, and position India in global value chains, this mission is a key strategy. The PM E-DRIVE Scheme, with a budget of ₹10,900 crore, is a flagship program under the mission, contributing to the sale of over 22.12 lakh EVs by January 2026.
The government is actively pushing for electric public transport. A ₹4,391 crore allocation funds 14,028 electric buses, with 13,800 assigned to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. The PM e-Bus Sewa-Payment Security Mechanism Scheme aims to deploy 10,000 electric buses through a Public Private Partnership, backed by charging networks and depot infrastructure to ensure a sustainable transition.
NITI Aayog’s India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI), launched in August 2025, evaluates progress. Delhi, Maharashtra, and Chandigarh lead in this index, showing well-established EV ecosystems. Their efforts in adoption, infrastructure, and innovation are setting a precedent for other regions to follow.
India is also focused on building domestic battery manufacturing. A ₹18,100 crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) program aims to develop 50 GWh of local battery capacity by 2026. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on imported batteries and lower EV production costs. Developing a robust battery sector will enhance India’s energy security and position it as a global battery market player.
India’s transition to electric mobility is advancing under the combined force of government policies, technological progress, and growing consumer demand. The expanding EV market, charging infrastructure, and robust manufacturing ecosystem are all supporting India’s goal of a cleaner, more self-reliant future.
