Xiaomi's SkyNomad N70 hits 505 km electric range

Xiaomi has introduced a new player into the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) market with the launch of the SkyNomad N70 Max. This five-seat SUV boasts an impressive claimed pure-electric driving range of 505 km under the CLTC protocol, which the company claims is the best in production for EREVs. Alongside it, the SkyNomad N90 Max, a seven-seat version, joins the lineup. Built on the new Kunlun Platform, these vehicles offer an extended range, family-friendly design, and advanced smart features. The SkyNomad Series is positioned to cater to families looking for spacious, efficient, and versatile electric SUVs.

Unsurpassed Electric Range of 505 km

The SkyNomad N70 Max is powered by a 76 kWh ternary lithium battery, combined with a 1.5-liter range-extendable gasoline generator. Xiaomi has engineered this setup to achieve a CLTC-based electric driving range of 505 km. The company emphasizes that no other EREV currently on the market can match this performance. Xiaomi claims that the range extender’s internal combustion engine is highly efficient, reaching over 44% peak thermal efficiency, and can generate around 4 kWh of electricity for every liter of fuel used. The Harbin Dongan 1.5T engine used in the N70 Max has a particularly high peak efficiency rating of more than 44%, pushing 4 kWh per liter of fuel to the electric powertrain, and translating into the maximum advertised 505 km CLTC electric range.

In direct comparisons with other unnamed EREVs, the N70 Max outshines its rivals. These competitors typically feature battery capacities between 63.3 kWh and 80.3 kWh, yet none exceed the N70’s claimed range. Xiaomi specifically highlights a vehicle it believes to be the Leapmotor D19, which carries an 80.3 kWh battery but only achieves 500 km of CLTC range. This comparison shows how the N70 Max achieves higher efficiency and performance despite having a slightly smaller battery. The N70 Max is a dual-motor AWD system. The front motor produces up to 210 kW (282 hp), while the rear motor delivers 100 kW (134 hp), for a combined peak motor output of 310 kW (416 hp). The ICE is 1.5L, and according to Xiaomi, the range extender has a peak thermal efficiency exceeding 44% and can generate about 4 kWh of electricity from 1L of fuel. Xiaomi said the SkyNomad platform can achieve energy consumption as low as 15.85 kWh/100 km under CLTC conditions. The company uses silicon carbide power electronics, low-rolling-resistance tyres, lightweight construction, and thermal-management optimisation to reduce electricity consumption.

N90 Max: Family-Focused and Long-Range

The SkyNomad N90 Max is designed for larger families, offering a seven-seat layout and a combined driving range of 1,705 km. It also shares the same 76 kWh battery and 310 kW dual-motor AWD system with the N70 Max. This setup gives it the ability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 190 km/h. When the battery is fully depleted, the vehicle maintains a WLTC fuel efficiency of 6.26 L/100 km, making it ideal for long-distance travel. The N90 Max uses the same 76 kWh ternary lithium battery but has a CLTC electric range of 464 km. Its combined range with a full battery and fuel tank reaches 1,705 km, according to Xiaomi. The full-size SUV measures 5,285 mm in length, 1,998 mm in width and 1,825 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,080 mm. Its cabin supports a 2+2+3 seven-seat layout, with six seat rails allowing the second and third rows to move fore and aft.

The N90 Max also supports fast charging, which is key for family-oriented use. It can recover 285 km of driving range in just 15 minutes and charge from 20% to 80% in 18 minutes. Its interior is designed for flexibility, featuring a 2+2+3 seating configuration and nearly 90-degree opening rear doors. The SUV also offers up to 1,831 liters of cargo space, along with 34 storage compartments to accommodate the needs of a family on the move.

Design for Efficiency and Usability

Xiaomi’s design philosophy for the SkyNomad Series blends aesthetics with practicality. The SUVs feature an upright exterior with a flat roofline and squared-off shapes, which help maximize interior volume without compromising aerodynamic performance. The larger N90 Max achieves a drag coefficient of 0.255, despite its substantial size. Over 140 aerodynamic enhancements have been incorporated to reduce air resistance and improve energy efficiency.

Inside, the cabin is crafted with comfort and convenience in mind. Nearly 95% of high-touch surfaces are wrapped in soft, premium materials, available in cream or brown tones. Xiaomi has also thoughtfully curated the exterior color options, offering shades like Mountain Green, Valley Blue, and Volcanic Gray. These choices reflect the brand’s commitment to modern design while staying true to the needs of the family market.

The SkyNomad Series from Xiaomi is a bold entry into the extended-range SUV segment. With a focus on maximizing electric range, family space, and charging speed, it positions itself as a practical and versatile option for modern households. Whether for daily commutes, weekend getaways, or family road trips, these SUVs aim to meet the evolving needs of EV buyers. Xiaomi is making a strong case that it has engineered a complete solution tailored for the future of family mobility. Xiaomi has also partnered with Shell to develop exclusive low-viscosity oil for the onboard generator, allowing the 1.5-liter Harbin Dongan engine to operate without requiring oil changes for up to 3 years, bridging the gap between EREV maintenance and the minimal service required for fully electric vehicles. This 3-year oil change interval aims to make owning an EREV as hassle-free as owning an EV. Xiaomi also demonstrated a couple of features and tests it is proud of, including the double tyre blowout test with the Skynomad N90 Max. With seven occupants on board and travelling at 160 km/h, the SUV’s front-left and rear-left tyres were blown out simultaneously. According to Xiaomi, the N90 Max maintained straight-line stability and was brought to a controlled stop.
