A Coach's Community, Raising for a Coach
MAKS Volleyball Club in Twin Falls, Idaho is helping a key figure heal. Coach Austin James, injured in the recent mass shooting, now faces long recovery ahead. The club is raising funds to support both his health and the team.
The fundraiser began as a way for club members to cover dues. It grew into a larger movement when the club realized the full scope of James's injuries. Marija Mikic, club director, said his impact goes beyond the court. Players call him a community leader.
James's Role and the Club's Response
For over twelve months, James has coached players and offered help to families in the area. His work off the court impressed club leaders. 'He’s always there to help,' said Mikic. Now, the community is returning the favor.
Head Coach George Moreno described James as someone who naturally steps in to protect others. Moreno said the coach's actions reflect who he is. 'That impact on these kids is really what they need,' he said.
How to Help
The club is raffling a donated pig, with all proceeds going toward James's recovery and the volleyball program. Donations and ticket purchases are being handled through the club’s website. The goal is to ensure players stay in the sport while James heals.
