Riding Todd Pletcher's 4-1 shot Local Knowledge, Velázquez ended a four-year victory drought in this race, securing a narrow one-length win over a field of 3-year-old sprinters competing over 6 1/2 furlongs.
Local Knowledge, who sat just behind the early pace set by American Man, surged into contention in the stretch. Velázquez found space through the field and drove his colt hard down the final straight, finishing just ahead of Solitude Dude in a neck decision. The pair crossed with a final time of 1:14.89 on Saratoga’s fast main track, with Local Knowledge returning $10.34 as the second choice.
After a long break, he returned with a third-place finish in an allowance race on June 6 at Saratoga over the same distance. The Amsterdam was his third start, and his first win of the campaign, marking a strong return for the 3-year-old.
Velázquez's 800th graded-stakes win is a landmark achievement in the world of horse racing. His previous victories in the Amsterdam all came while riding for Todd Pletcher, who has won the race five times in total.
