Bhatias Bring Their Story to UT Dallas
Jyoti Bhatia, an Indian-American businessman and UT Dallas graduate, and his wife Nishi Bhatia have launched a graduate fellowship at the University of Texas at Dallas. The Nishi and Jyoti P Bhatia Fellowship is intended to help students overcome financial challenges and focus on their studies, research, and future careers.
Jyoti Bhatia, who earned his graduate degree from UT Dallas, has deep ties to the university, as two of his children also graduated there. His commitment to the campus is mirrored in the naming of a collaboration space in the Engineering and Computer Science West Building.
A Legacy of Giving
The Bhatias are active in the Dallas community through organizations like the Hindu Temple of North Texas and the India Association of North Texas. Jyoti Bhatia also contributes to Lions Clubs International, while Nishi built a career as an educator in the Plano Independent School District.
The couple's philanthropy echoes past acts of generosity, including an initiative by textile executive Anil Kochhar and his wife Marilyn to erase education loans for students at North Carolina State University’s Wilson College of Textiles.
Nishi Bhatia said the fellowship is an open door for students who have earned their place through hard work and perseverance. The first recipients will be selected in the fall, offering expanded resources and support for graduate scholars.
The Bhatias hope this gift will inspire students to do the same for others in the future. 'If financial assistance can remove one obstacle,' Nishi said, 'then we believe it is a worthwhile investment.'
