These smart machines create detailed maps of your home, track your habits over time, and often include cameras and microphones that move through every room. As artificial intelligence becomes more advanced, these devices gain a better understanding of what they see and hear. With that power comes a growing concern: the potential for privacy breaches and data leaks. The solution to these problems, however, may not be as effective as it seems.

This week, the Federal Communications Commission took a step forward — or perhaps backward — by banning the import of robot vacuums made outside the United States. The agency cited an unacceptable risk to national security and the safety of American citizens. Yet, the regulation does not evaluate the actual security of the devices. Instead, it focuses entirely on their country of origin, not on the safety features or reliability of the products themselves.

More money, less safety

With this ban in place, American consumers will see a limited range of robot vacuum models. Innovation in this space will slow, and prices will likely rise. If the goal is improved safety, experts suggest a better approach would be to demand mandatory encryption of map data, regular security testing, and clear policies for how long data is kept — requirements that focus on security rather than manufacturing location.

Over the last decade, numerous robot vacuums have been found with security flaws and data leaks. Major companies in the industry — including Dreame, Ecovacs, Roborock, iRobot, and Shark — have all experienced security issues. These problems show that the real challenge lies not in where the products are made, but in the cybersecurity measures companies put in place.

China vs. US: manufacturing vs. trust

In its public notice, the FCC explicitly pointed to China as a key concern, warning that foreign governments might take advantage of security weaknesses in robots to gain access to sensitive data. China’s commerce ministry has already responded, calling the policy discriminatory and suppressive toward Chinese companies and products.

Mehul Nariyawala, president of Matic — the only company currently assembling robot vacuums in the US — notes that domestic manufacturing can make it easier to identify and prevent hardware backdoors, as well as to hold companies accountable when problems arise. However, he also emphasizes that simply making a product in Massachusetts does not make it inherently more secure than one made in Shenzhen. Security comes from the design and manufacturing process, not the country of origin.

The new rules for robot vacuums follow a pattern the FCC has used with other products, such as Wi-Fi routers and drones. In those cases, the agency has granted waivers to companies that haven’t moved their manufacturing to the US. This raises concerns about the consistency and fairness of how the new rules will be enforced. If the FCC can make exceptions now, will they do so in the future? And what does that mean for the overall effectiveness of the policy?

A broken solution for a real problem

One major issue with the ban is that it doesn’t address the millions of robot vacuums already in American homes. If these devices are truly a security threat — and there is evidence to back that claim — why not focus on the ones that are already on store shelves or in people’s living rooms?

Nariyawala believes the ban could eventually help expand US robotics manufacturing and build a more secure domestic supply chain. But he acknowledges this is a long-term project, likely taking years to realize. In the meantime, consumers are left with fewer choices and higher prices — but no real improvement in safety.

The key issue remains: how to ensure robot vacuums, and other autonomous devices, are built with strong cybersecurity standards. Until then, the ban appears to address a symptom rather than a cause. As the technology continues to evolve, so must the policies that govern it. For now, it seems the robot vacuum dilemma is more complicated — and more urgent — than a simple import ban suggests.
