Samsung's latest foldable phone continues to struggle with wireless charging and magnetic accessories. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, much like other Galaxy models, lacks the internal magnets found in Pixel phones. This design choice creates a frustrating experience for users who want to use popular Qi2-compatible wireless chargers or attach magnetic cases and wallets.
The root of the problem lies in how the phone is built. The camera bump on the Fold 8 runs down the side, which makes it difficult to align with the wireless charging coil inside the device. When users add a protective case, the bump is completely covered, which blocks the Qi2 magnets from doing their job. That misalignment slows down charging and makes it harder to use square-shaped magnetic accessories.
UAG's clever fix
UAG came up with a smart and simple solution to this ongoing issue. Their cases for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra include a small but important cutout in the area where the camera bump sits. This slight removal of material creates just the right amount of space to accommodate square Qi2 accessories. These include wireless chargers, magnetic wallets, and even stands that require a flat surface to attach properly.
This change makes a big difference in the user experience. Before UAG's design, users had to angle or twist their wireless car chargers awkwardly to fit around the phone's bump. With the new case, accessories can snap into place the way they're meant to. Magnetic wallets, which used to detach easily, now stick with much more security — even though the phone can become a bit heavier when fully loaded with all the accessories.
Not a perfect solution
Even with UAG's clever solution, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 still faces some physical limits. For example, magnetic wallets struggle to fit properly because the phone is simply too short to give the accessory enough space. That means users may still face problems when trying to use certain accessories, especially if they are designed for longer devices.
The real, long-term fix would need to come from Samsung itself, by redesigning the phone to support full Qi2 compatibility. Until then, case companies like UAG must step in and find creative ways to make wireless charging and magnetic accessories work at all.
Wireless charging should be convenient and intuitive. When a phone's design actively works against that, users are left dealing with slower charges and tricky accessory setups. UAG’s solution shows how third-party companies can help overcome design limitations — but it's still a temporary fix, not a true fix. Samsung needs to build its devices with users in mind, not just engineering choices.
