In a candid chat with Great Company With Jamie Lang, Tom Aspinall offered a stark look at the toll of the surgeries he needed after his no-contest fight at UFC 321 against Ciryl Gane. The procedures were extensive—three in total, with one for his left eye and two for the right. During the operations, he was kept awake but drowsy, which left him fully aware as the surgeons worked.
Describing the experience as nothing short of terrifying, Aspinall said the whole thing felt like a nightmare. Even though the eye was numbed with drops and an injection, the sight of the scalpel and the sensation of it slicing through his eye were agonizing to witness.
Emotional struggles during the healing process
The physical pain wasn’t the only challenge Aspinall faced. He admitted to being deeply anxious in the first few weeks after the surgeries. “At first, I was super scared about it, to be honest,” he said, explaining the fear that he might not recover fully or suffer long-term complications.
Aspinall also took the opportunity to address the broader issues in combat sports, pointing out the hidden physical and emotional toll fighters often endure. He linked this to fan backlash following the controversial stoppage of his fight with Gane, highlighting the need to understand what’s at stake for athletes beyond the public eye.
Aspinall’s path to the title and the road ahead
Despite the setbacks, Aspinall has continued to build on his success in the octagon. After securing the interim heavyweight title at UFC 295 in November 2023 with a 69-second knockout of Sergei Pavlovich, he defended it at UFC 304 in July 2024 by defeating Curtis Blaydes. His reign as undisputed champion was solidified after Jon Jones announced his retirement from the division.
Now, Aspinall is preparing for a high-stakes unification bout against Ciryl Gane, who recently claimed the interim title by defeating Alex Pereira at UFC Freedom 250. The fight, expected to take place in Paris in September, hinges on resolving the remaining contractual details before it can be finalized.
