A little over three months after winning the UFC Middleweight title, Sean Strickland has yet to set a return date. The champion, who captured the belt with a razor-thin victory over Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 328 in Newark, New Jersey, revealed last week that a lingering shoulder injury will require a few more weeks of recovery. Despite this delay, Strickland is not ruling out a second fight with his loudest critic.

Strickland’s shoulder sustained a Grade 1 AC joint separation just four days before his title defense, an injury suffered during intense sparring with Johnny Eblen. That did not stop him from pushing through an exhausting five-round war with Chimaev, a performance that may have further delayed his recovery.

Now, with the injury still in the healing process, Strickland has turned his attention to potential matchups. While his name has been linked to contenders like Nassourdine Imavov and Dricus du Plessis, the UFC could just as easily run back Chimaev, who has continued to voice his displeasure over the result. Chimaev's relentless social media presence and constant criticism have only fueled Strickland's desire for a rematch.

In a sharp-tongued response, Strickland took to social media and offered to 'teach Chimaev how to cut weight' if it would get the Ukrainian to 'stop bitching for a second L.' It’s a clear signal that while the shoulder needs time, his mouth remains in prime championship condition.

A December fight in Las Vegas appears to be the most likely scenario for a return, though the timing hinges on medical clearance. With six numbered events remaining on the 2026 schedule, the UFC could look to capitalize on the bad blood and high drama, especially if the rematch sells well with fans.
