The essentials
  • Eugene and Klamath Falls both advanced to the Northwest Regionals in Medford.
  • The tournament was praised for excellent behavior, umpiring and community support.

Clyde Allen Field in North Bend showcased vibrant community spirit during the American Legion Single-A State Tournament, hosted by North Coos. The event concluded with the Eugene Ole Athletics taking first place and the Klamath Falls Falcons claiming second. Both squads advanced to the Northwest Regionals in Medford.

Community and Cooperation

North Coos coach Brad Horning praised the overall positive behavior at the event. 'The coaches and players were super well-behaved,' he said. Fans kept the area tidy, and the mix of umpires from Douglas County and the local association performed well. The weather was sunny with little wind, and all games started punctually, contributing to the tournament's success.

Local students also contributed by performing the national anthem, which captivated the audience. Alexander Peck, a North Coos right fielder, opened the tournament. He had previously become the first solo music state champion for North Bend High School in the spring. The next night, Paisley Swanson, a student from North Bend, played the anthem on her flute, accompanied by her twin brothers, who play for North Coos.

On the final day, Isabella Gerami's performance of the national anthem deeply touched the audience, Horning noted. A team of Joe Bollig Sr., Jeff Davis, Mike Taylor, and Quintin Hall ensured the field was in excellent condition. Julie Martin managed the scoreboard, served as the announcer, and maintained the scorebook for the entire 15-game tournament.

North Coos claimed one victory in the tournament but was eventually eliminated after a 15-5 loss to the Central Point Comets. Earlier in the event, Eugene had also beaten Klamath Falls 6-5. Clyde Allen Field returned as a host after previously holding the tournament in 2018.

The field's connection to the tournament began in 1954, when the event was first held and the team was still called North Bend. That year, the competing teams included Eugene, Klamath Falls, and Myrtle Creek, with Clyde Allen coaching the North Bend squad.

The scorecard

Eugene 2, Klamath Falls 1; Klamath Falls 4, Columbia River Gorge 3; Klamath Falls 5, Central Point 2.
