The AI industry is doubling down on the idea of the ‘super app’ — but not all are succeeding. OpenAI recently revealed its own attempt is “kind of a mess.” Microsoft, however, is pressing forward. On Wednesday, during a call with investors, CEO Satya Nadella confirmed the company is building a Copilot super app that combines chat, code, and Cowork features. He said this unified experience will launch this year.
The app will serve both consumers and commercial users, bringing together Copilot’s chat, code, and automation tools into a single interface. Nadella described the effort as a “major step forward,” though he did not offer a timeline for when the app will be available.
Microsoft isn’t the only player in the super app space
OpenAI, too, has been working on its own all-in-one AI app, but has struggled to deliver a coherent product. Microsoft, in contrast, appears to be learning from those missteps — or at least pretending it is. Still, the company has not ruled out future shifts. Nadella recently mentioned Microsoft is leaning toward agents over apps, hinting the direction of AI could still be in flux.
Apple isn’t buying into the super app trend
Whether that strategy will shift remains an open question. For now, Microsoft’s Copilot is the most visible name in the race to build an AI super app — and it may soon have company.
