McLaren's resurgence shines in Norris's victory

Upgrades and momentum give Norris a boost
McLaren's recent performance boost came after the introduction of key upgrades, which helped the team overcome early-season reliability issues. Norris's victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix was the first for the team this season and represented a turning point in their campaign. Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard praised Norris for his performance, calling it "a true world champion's." Coulthard highlighted how Norris's strong weekend at the Hungaroring demonstrated his potential and talent.
Coulthard also addressed Norris's reputation as a "party boy," suggesting that this label may not be entirely fair. He emphasized that Norris's performance speaks for itself, pointing to the driver's ability to deliver under pressure.
Piastri's retirement shifts focus to Norris
During the race, Norris's teammate, Oscar Piastri, faced difficulties after colliding with Williams' Carlos Sainz. The incident led to a gearbox failure, forcing Piastri to retire from the race. This event underscored Norris's capability to manage the race effectively and secure a win, even when his teammate had to pull out.
Coulthard discussed Norris's performance on the Up To Speed podcast, highlighting the driver as the standout of the race. Norris's victory was not only a personal achievement but also a significant moment for McLaren, as it marked their return to form. Coulthard and co-host Jolie Sharpe acknowledged Norris's dominant display, emphasizing that it was a performance worthy of admiration from fans and experts alike.
As the 2026 championship heads into its mandatory summer break, Norris's lead in the drivers' standings is notable. Kimi Antonelli currently leads with 219 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton in second with 169 points and George Russell in third with 160 points. Norris ranks fifth with 128 points, showing that his performance at the Hungaroring has positioned him as a strong contender in the race for the title.
Norris, who celebrated his first Grand Prix victory of the year in Hungary, explained why he still believes he can defend his title, despite trailing leader Kimi Antonelli by a significant margin. Norris found the start of the season difficult, finishing fifth in Melbourne and Japan, while at the Chinese Grand Prix, technical issues prevented the world champion from starting. It was not until the fourth race of the season in Miami that he finished second on the Grand Prix podium. Norris subsequently made it into the top three again in Spain, finishing third, and at the final race before the summer break at the Hungaroring, he was finally able to celebrate his first GP victory of the year.
Consequently, he trails championship leader Kimi Antonelli by a significant margin, with 91 points separating him from the Mercedes driver at the top of the standings. Nevertheless, Norris still believes he has a chance of defending his title. Speaking to "Sky Sports F1" after the race, he said: "The pressure is on Kimi, that much is certain. I myself don’t feel any pressure." And he pointed to the number of mistakes made by the Mercedes works team: "As a team, they’ve made more mistakes; we’ve made fewer, and we’ve made a strong comeback. I do expect them to keep winning, but I expect the same from us. From now on, we simply have to deliver a perfect performance for the rest of the year," emphasised the twelve-time Grand Prix winner, adding: "We need to improve our car. Here in Hungary, we were the fastest in qualifying and in the race. But not every race will go so well for us, so we must ensure that our car is fast on every type of track."
