Apple’s iPhone launch timeline may break its usual rhythm
Apple typically introduces four new iPhone models in early September, and customers can usually count on all of them becoming available by the end of the month. However, the situation changed in 2020 when the company postponed its unveiling to October. During that year, Apple only released two models at the start, with the remaining two delayed until November. Reports now suggest a similar deviation might happen this year. While the official launch event is still expected in September, not every model might hit stores simultaneously, marking a potential shift from Apple’s typical strategy. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has suggested September 8 or September 9 as the most likely dates for the event.
Pro models dominate, foldable lags behind
According to sources, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max variants are likely to debut as scheduled. However, the highly anticipated foldable model, the iPhone Ultra, might not be immediately available. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has indicated manufacturing challenges have limited early production of the foldable iPhone, leading to a delayed official launch. Some leaks suggest it could arrive several weeks after the initial launch. If this turns out to be the case, it would mirror the delayed rollout pattern seen in 2020, when not all models were available at once.
Smaller lineup possible due to production and strategy
There are also indications that the total number of iPhone models unveiled this fall may be fewer than usual. If rumors about the iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 being postponed to March 2027 prove accurate, Apple might only release three new models this time. That would be the smallest set of new iPhones seen in fall since 2019. Whether it's due to ongoing struggles with the global memory shortage, supply chain disruptions, or a deliberate strategic pivot, Apple is seemingly adjusting to a more fragmented release schedule. These changes might reflect both technical and business-related challenges the company is facing. Apple plans to split its iPhone 18 lineup into two distinct launch windows: flagship models in the fall of 2026, and lower-end devices in the spring of 2027. This split aims to better segment the product line, potentially increasing the average selling price as consumers gravitate toward higher-end models during the initial launch period.
