Herrsching has taken a significant step toward potentially hosting an Ironman triathlon event after the local council approved a feasibility study with a 14-10 majority vote. While this move shows promise, many details remain under discussion, including the format of the race, the number of participants, and how the event will be financed. The council's decision clears an important political hurdle, but final approval depends on further investigations into venue logistics, infrastructure requirements, and participant expectations.
Under the current proposal, the swimming stage would occur in Herrschinger Bucht, offering a scenic and accessible location for competitors. The cycling course is expected to wind through the Starnberg district, providing both technical challenges and beautiful views for athletes and spectators alike. The marathon route is planned to follow the Ammersee-Ostufer, which allows for a scenic and manageable course. These routes are being evaluated for their ability to accommodate the event's needs, including safety and crowd control.
Despite the council's support, financial planning remains a central issue. However, local officials have made it clear that this amount should not come from municipal budgets. Instead, the focus is on securing funding through private sponsors, in-kind services, and volunteer support. The community will also play a role by offering available spaces and facilities, ensuring the event aligns with broader economic and tourism goals.
The council granted Mayor Christian Schiller the authority to send an unbinding letter of intent to the Ironman Group. This document is intended to keep discussions open and encourage further collaboration. Importantly, the letter does not represent a binding agreement or commitment from Herrsching. Both the town and the Ironman Group have stressed that no final decision has been made, and additional talks are needed before moving forward with any formal arrangements.
The proposal will be further reviewed at a meeting with all mayors in the Starnberg district scheduled for July 28. This upcoming session aims to ensure all local leaders are on the same page before moving forward. Notably, the shareholders' assembly of the Gesellschaft für Wirtschaftsförderung und Tourismus (gwt) had already unanimously endorsed continuing the feasibility study, showing strong support for exploring the event's potential benefits for the region.
Although the event's future is not yet secure, Herrsching has clearly signaled its interest in becoming a prominent name in the triathlon community. The challenge ahead lies in balancing ambitious goals with practical considerations, such as logistics, community impact, and resource allocation. If the plans progress as expected, the event could start as early as 2028, adding another significant sports destination to Germany's growing triathlon circuit.
