The essentials
  • Free and Go users get unlimited text chats starting next week.
  • GPT-5.6 Luna is now the default model, replacing GPT-5.5 Instant.
  • The new Think button lets users choose how much detail ChatGPT provides.

Next week, free users and those on the Go plan will no longer face chat limits on ChatGPT. Instead of cutting off or switching to a weaker model after a few interactions, they can ask as many questions as they like. This change marks an expansion in what OpenAI offers to users who don't pay for its higher tiers.

A new model takes the reins

GPT-5.6 Luna, the smallest of three new GPT-5.6 models, will replace the older GPT-5.5 Instant as the default for free and Go users. This shift is scheduled to occur sometime this week. Luna is described as a more efficient model, designed to maintain performance while reducing computational load.

A choice in depth with the Think button

Alongside the chat limit removal, free and Go users will gain access to a new Think button next week. The button allows users to choose how deeply ChatGPT analyzes their prompts, from quick answers for simple queries to longer, more detailed responses for complex tasks. This feature adds more user control over response length and effort.

Plus and Pro users will see the Think button as a slider, offering options ranging from 'instant' to 'pro' levels of thinking. The tone and style of the responses remain unchanged, but the depth of analysis increases with each level.

Despite these changes, some limitations remain. Free and Go users still face file upload and image generation limits. These constraints suggest a continuing divide between the free and paid tiers, even as OpenAI improves the base experience.

In an internal evaluation, the updated GPT-5.6 Sol model—exclusive to Plus and Pro users—showed a 68% reduction in factual errors for prompts in financial, medical, and legal contexts. The model is described as better at avoiding mistakes when handling numbers, dates, sources, rules, or assumptions.

However, OpenAI clarified that the version of GPT-5.6 Sol used in ChatGPT Work and Codex won't change as part of this update. That model remains tailored for professional environments and coding tasks, while the new Sol variant is optimized for everyday conversation.
