Vodafone has entered the legal tech market by partnering with AI startup Aavalynx to co-develop a platform for managing and tracking legal disputes. The AI tool will allow companies to forecast financial costs in real time, shifting litigation from an unmanaged cost to a controlled financial risk asset. This venture challenges dominant players like Harvey and Legora. Aavalynx, which announced a £1.5 million pre-seed funding round, is building the platform to meet the evolving needs of legal services.
Roos previously worked at Freshfields, Latham & Watkins, and Quinn Emanuel and founded her own law firm, Aavagard, in 2021. She emphasized Vodafone’s active role in shaping the platform, contributing its vision for features that meet in-house legal teams’ needs. 'Great tools make disputes disappear,' she said, not just 'efficient.'
The legal tech market is dominated by Harvey and Legora, which leverage celebrity endorsements in their campaigns—Legora with Jude Law and Harvey with the actor portraying its namesake, Harvey Spectre. Roos argues these tools, while improving lawyer efficiency, do not address the complexities of dispute resolution. 'Generic LLM models cannot tackle the unique challenges of legal disputes,' she said, stressing that true innovation lies in tools that eliminate disputes, not just streamline them.
Aavalynx’s platform provides a real-time, unified view of disputes for legal and business leaders, turning litigation into a manageable risk asset. Roos notes that while existing tools make the dispute process more efficient, what’s needed is technology that can eliminate disputes altogether. The platform faces competition from startups like Clio in the growing legal tech space. Vodafone was contacted for comment but has not yet responded.
