The essentials

Despite efforts to pivot into artificial intelligence data center operations, Cipher Digital is still heavily reliant on Bitcoin mining. On Tuesday, the company's stock took a hit after it reported second-quarter results that were far below expectations.

Revenue and Losses Miss Estimates

For the quarter, Cipher Digital generated $24.8 million in revenue, a sharp decline from the $43.6 million recorded in the same period last year. The net loss for the quarter expanded to $268 million, or $0.65 per share, compared to a loss of less than $46 million in the second quarter of 2025.

The loss was largely attributed to a $151 million non-cash warrant remeasurement. Analysts had anticipated a narrower net loss of $0.23 per share, with revenue forecasts just over $32.5 million. The recent weakness in cryptocurrency prices is seen as a major factor behind the disappointing results.

In a positive development, Cipher Digital announced that a tenant for its Black Pearl data center will start receiving compute capacity in August 2025, a month earlier than originally planned. The client was described as an 'investment-grade hyperscale tenant,' though further details were not provided.

The company also mentioned acquiring an option for a new data center site called Apollo, located near San Antonio, Texas. This is part of Cipher Digital's ongoing effort to expand its AI-focused operations.

A Question of Viability

While the early move on the data center tenant is a positive, the broader question remains whether Cipher Digital can build a sustainable data center business. For now, it's still too early to tell, and the sharp decline in its stock price suggests that investors are skeptical.

The company's future depends heavily on its ability to pivot successfully away from the volatile crypto mining business. Until that pivot proves itself, the market will likely remain wary.

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is the hyperscaler tenant for the Black Pearl site, with which the company has agreed to a 15-year deal valued at $5.5 billion. This arrangement will provide Cipher Digital with $367 million in annual recurring revenue.

Additionally, Cipher Digital has acquired an option for a 900-megawatt site near San Antonio, Texas. The deal with Amazon covers 300 megawatts, so the 900-megawatt site could potentially generate over $1 billion in annual recurring revenue. Cipher Digital highlighted the site's potential due to its flat, buildable terrain and favorable connectivity.

Cipher Digital has also fully funded its Stingray site after its bond offering. The facility will have a total site power capacity of 100 megawatts, with Amazon as its tenant. This is another revenue stream that can make Cipher Digital less reliant on debt financing.

"This accelerated delivery proves we can execute at scale, with speed, and without compromise in a challenging environment. As we continue to acquire new sites and sign new deals, our foundation of disciplined execution is what truly sets us apart," Cipher Digital CEO Tyler Page said in the press release.

“No one likes a monster revenue miss or a big whiff on the bottom line. Unfortunately for Cipher Digital, that's exactly what it provided with the second-quarter results.”
What's next

The company must prove its data center operations can sustain performance, with key developments likely before year-end.
