Ukraine Identifies Russian Unit Behind Jet-Powered Drone Attack
A Russian drone attack killed two people in a Chernihiv supermarket on July 26. Among the dead was a 9-year-old girl. Twenty-five others were hurt, including three children. Ukraine's military intelligence called the strike a 'war crime.'
The HUR agency traced the attack to Combat Group 3 of the GROM 'Cascade' Separate Unmanned Systems Brigade. This unit belongs to Russia's Unmanned Systems Forces, set up in 2025, one year after Ukraine launched its own similar military branch.
According to HUR, the GROM Cascade unit focuses on hitting civilian sites in Ukraine with long-range drone strikes. The agency said the unit draws in 'privileged' people like officials, lawmakers, and 'regional warlords,' offering them short-term jobs that give veteran status without risking their lives in battle.
The Jet-Powered Geran-4 Drone
The drone used in the attack was a Geran-4. It can fly at speeds up to 500 kilometers per hour and carry a 50-kilogram warhead. Ukrainian forces said they shot one down for the first time in January 2026.
The first jet-powered Geran version was shot down in January 2024. Geran drones are based on Iran's Shahed models, which are known for long-distance flights with heavy warheads. Russia has continuously upgraded these drones during the war.
The HUR agency is still investigating those responsible for the July 26 strike. It said, 'For every war crime committed against the Ukrainian people, there will be fair retribution.'
The strike happened during the day when many shoppers were in the store. The drone had a video camera, suggesting the attack was planned to hit a civilian target at a busy time.
