Napoli are intensifying their interest in Benoît Badiashile, with the French centre-back emerging as the top option to plug a defense weakened by injury. According to Corriere dello Sport, the Italian club sees Badiashile, a left-footed presence, as the natural replacement for Alessandro Buongiorno, who is sidelined with a knee issue, and Sam Beukema, who has also suffered fitness problems.
Massimiliano Allegri is keen to bring Badiashile to Naples, with sporting director Giovanni Manna actively working on the deal since the team's training camp in Dimaro. Yet the move has stalled momentarily as Chelsea are deep in a pre-season tour in Australia. Their upcoming friendlies against Juventus and Milan could provide clarity upon their return.
Napoli's preferred structure for the deal is a loan with an option to buy. This approach is understandable considering Badiashile's injury history, which limited him to just 16 matches last season. Chelsea, however, want a permanent sale. The £35m they paid for him in 2023 likely means they’re unwilling to settle for a temporary arrangement.
Despite the structural impasse, Badiashile is said to be open to a move. A fresh start in Serie A and a shot at Champions League football may tempt him. Chelsea are also looking to reduce their defensive squad, with manager Xabi Alonso acknowledging the need to slim down their ranks. That could work in Napoli’s favor.
But the Partenopei must first sell to make space. The recent €30m+ sale of Miguel Gutiérrez to Bayer Leverkusen has created some breathing room. Still, under UEFA rules, the financial gain must be spread over three years, which leaves Giovanni Manna with a tight balancing act as he works to finalize the Badiashile deal.
