WestJet Flight Attendants Begin Ratification of Tentative Union Agreement
Flight attendants represented by CUPE 8125 have started the ratification process for a tentative collective agreement with WestJet after months of negotiations. The deal was reached Monday, and details are being shared with members. The tentative agreement includes wage improvements, rest periods, and recognition of required duty hours. Details will be reviewed during meetings next week, with voting to follow after.
Alia Hussain, president of CUPE Local 8125, said the agreement marks meaningful progress for flight attendants. It acknowledges the work performed by cabin crew and improves compensation, scheduling, rest, health and safety protections, and working conditions. It also includes updates to time off, benefits, and layover protections.
A key highlight is the recognition of required duty hours, which were previously not paid. Combined with wage increases, this ensures flight attendants are paid for more of their work. The agreement also includes retroactive pay and improved scheduling and reserve provisions.
If approved, the agreement will be in effect from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2028. It also includes improvements to vacation and special days off, benefits, hotel and layover protections, uniform and equipment allowances, and other working conditions. The Bargaining Committee has encouraged members to vote, calling ratification a crucial decision in collective bargaining.
CUPE 8125 is ensuring members are informed before voting. Meetings are scheduled for next week to discuss the agreement. Voting will proceed after those meetings.
The union thanked WestJet passengers for their support during the process. For further information, contact Lisa Lambert in Calgary at 403-330-9530 or George Soule in Ottawa at 306-531-9112 or via email at gsoule@cupe.ca.
