  • انخفض سهم Salesforce بنسبة 3.2% بعد تعيين ميغيل ميلانو رئيسًا للعمليات.

On Thursday, Salesforce's performance sent shockwaves through the Dow. As a major player in the enterprise software space, the company's shares dipped by 3.2% following news that Miguel Milano, a former Oracle executive, would be appointed as its new operating chief. The decision caught the market's attention and contributed to the Dow's overall struggles for the day.

The broader market mirrored this decline, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both ending the day in the red. The S&P 500 closed at 7,709.96, a 0.2% drop. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq fell by 0.1% to 26,348.35. The Dow, which had closed at a record high the previous day, was hit hardest, giving up nearly 1% of its value. Boeing and Honeywell both saw significant losses, each tumbling over 3% in value.

Traders Hesitate Ahead of Jobs Report

Investors remained cautious ahead of the upcoming nonfarm payrolls report, scheduled for release on Friday. The report is expected to reveal that the U.S. economy added 88,000 jobs in July, up from a gain of 57,000 in the previous month.

The latest economic data, however, painted a mixed picture. For the week ended August 1, initial jobless claims in the U.S. increased slightly to 199,000, a rise of 1,000 from the previous week's revised level. While this was a bit higher than the 202,000 expected by economists, the result was still better than the 197,000 initially reported for the prior week.

Sectors Split Amid Mixed Global Markets

Despite the overall market's downward trend, some sectors saw significant moves to the upside. Telecom stocks staged a strong recovery, with the NYSE Arca North American Telecom Index rising by 3.1% after a steep decline the previous day. Similarly, oil service stocks benefited from the sharp rebound in crude oil prices. The Philadelphia Oil Service Index climbed by 3% in response to the rising energy prices.

On the flip side, airline stocks suffered as fuel costs increased and demand softened. The NYSE Arca Airline Index fell by 3.1% for the day. Housing and brokerage stocks also posted notable declines after several sessions of gains. Globally, markets showed a divided performance. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell by 0.9%, while China's Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.6%. European markets showed modest movement, with the German DAX rising 0.1% and the French CAC 40 increasing by 0.4%. However, the U.K.'s FTSE 100 edged down slightly by 0.2%.

The bond market also reflected the uncertainty seen in equities. Treasuries experienced a sharp sell-off as oil prices rose, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note increasing by 5.3 basis points to 4.670%. This inverse relationship between bond prices and yields further underscored the market's mixed sentiment and volatility.

Zoom out

The tug-of-war between sector strength and macro uncertainty is a familiar script ahead of major economic releases.
