A dream realized through horses and yoga
Lauren Barroso of Lynbrook has combined her lifelong love of horses and wellness by opening Stable Studio at the New York Equestrian Center in West Hempstead. The studio, launched in April, offers yoga and wellness classes to riders and the broader community.
Barroso, 34, has trained at the center for nearly 20 years and taught yoga for over a decade. When center president Alex Jacobson suggested the idea of a wellness studio, she saw an opportunity to unite her two passions.
Yoga and riding share common ground
Barroso pointed out that yoga and horseback riding both require balance, focus, and control of breathing. Both demand a strong mental and physical connection—though in equestrian sports, the link is with a living partner. This bond is what makes the sport distinct and fulfilling.
Expanding the community and programming
Stable Studio provides a range of classes, such as yoga for riders, restorative yoga, and sound healing. The classes support physical fitness and mental wellness for those who attend.
The studio has been added to the center’s summer camp and has included guest instructors like Daisy Wilson, a Long Beach-based Pilates expert who led a Pilates & Ponies class.
Jacobson said the center supports 250 to 300 families with riding lessons, therapeutic programs, and more. The wellness initiative has brought people closer together, improving riders’ focus and connections.
The center has also launched family-friendly programming like mommy-and-me classes, while riders of all ages join in wellness sessions. “It makes them better riders and mentally focused,” Jacobson said.
Barroso said the studio’s success has exceeded her expectations. She is especially happy to see both longtime riders and new visitors enjoying the new space.
The New York Equestrian Center, celebrating 20 years under Jacobson’s leadership, plans to expand Stable Studio with more wellness programs, trail rides, and community events.
Barroso hopes the studio will continue welcoming experienced riders and newcomers looking to connect with nature and the community.
