The essentials
  • The company has cut 28% of its workforce since August 2022.
  • Wayfair expects a $70 million to $80 million hit in the first quarter of 2024 from the latest layoffs.

On Friday, shares of Wayfair (NYSE: W), the online home-furnishing giant, saw a significant jump after the company revealed it would reduce its global workforce by 13%. At 10:10 a.m. ET, the stock was up more than 11%. The market reaction was positive despite the workforce reduction, as investors interpreted the move as a necessary step to streamline operations and enhance financial performance.

Wayfair CEO Niraj Shah stated that the company had overhired during a strong economic period, particularly in 2020. During that time, the company’s revenue surged from $9.1 billion to $14.1 billion, leading to rapid expansion. As consumer demand cooled, Wayfair began rethinking its staffing strategy, which now includes scaling back to align with current market conditions.

A history of cuts

This latest round of layoffs is not the first such action. In 2022, the company had already cut 5% of its workforce in August and followed up with another 10% reduction in January 2023. The fact that another round of cuts was necessary suggests those earlier steps did not fully address the challenges the company now faces.

The company anticipates a short-term financial impact of $70 million to $80 million in the first quarter of 2024 as a result of the most recent layoffs. However, management believes the cuts will result in annual savings of at least $280 million, which could significantly improve the company’s financial outlook in the longer term.

Profitability goals remain distant

While Wayfair has shown some progress in recent quarters, it still has a long way to go to meet its profitability targets. In the third quarter of 2023, the company generated $121 million in positive operating cash flow, a significant improvement from a $431 million cash outflow in the same period the previous year. However, the company is still struggling to reach its 10% adjusted EBITDA margin goal, as it sits at just 1% over the past 12 months.

Growth for Wayfair has slowed, so the company is focusing on cost management to reach its financial targets. While the recent layoffs may be a step in the right direction, analysts and investors likely expect additional measures as the company continues its path to profitability.

“The reality is that we went overboard in hiring during a strong economic period.”
The global ripple

Wayfair's cuts reflect a broader trend among tech and retail firms adjusting to tighter economic conditions and lower consumer demand.
