Philadelphia Waterdogs face defensive changes due to injury
The Waterdogs defense will lose a key player during a critical period. Starting goalkeeper Matt DeLuca, who has been central to the team's defensive efforts, is sidelined with a strained right adductor. He will miss three games, though coach Bill Tierney says he should return before the regular season concludes.
To replace DeLuca, the team has promoted undrafted rookie Sean Byrne. So far this season, Byrne has only had limited appearances, including during a Week 2 matchup against Boston. Now, he will take over goalkeeping duties until DeLuca is ready to return.
Roster shift following DeLuca's injury
By placing DeLuca on injured reserve, the Waterdogs gained flexibility to bring back veteran goalie Tim Troutner. Troutner had been part of the team's training camp but was released before the season began.
For DeLuca, the setback is significant. After years of sharing time with Dillon Ward, he finally secured the full-time starting position. The team even traded Ward to the California Redwoods, ensuring DeLuca had the crease to himself. Tierney had no reservations about his readiness. 'Matt is our guy,' Tierney said. 'Matt has earned this.'
A new challenge for Byrne
Byrne was thrust into the role unexpectedly. He played only a small role in the game against the Boston Cannons before taking over in the recent loss to the Utah Archers. Despite allowing 13 goals, Tierney felt the outcome didn't entirely reflect his performance.
'Unless something happens to him or he really goes south.' The second half of the game, Tierney explained, was so difficult that even the strongest goaltender could not have helped much. 'We just got beat,' he said.
Byrne comes with strong college credentials. During his four years at Army, he earned honors like the 2026 Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Co-Outstanding Goalkeeper Of The Year. Over his college career, he gave up an average of 8.38 goals per game, made 449 saves, and had a 29-8 win-loss record.
Tierney had considered drafting Byrne in the later rounds of the 2026 draft but acknowledges the difficulty of the jump to the professional game. 'It's a big step up,' he said. 'These guys shoot over 100 miles an hour, and it's not an easy job.'
Still, Tierney is hopeful. 'I don't think we have a drop-off with Sean.' A 50% save rate, he believes, would be a solid performance for the rookie.
Currently, the Waterdogs sit in third place in the East with a 4-3 record. However, they rank third-worst in the league with a scoring margin of minus-14. This weekend, they will take on the New York Atlas and Denver Outlaws in Denver in back-to-back matches.
