Morgan Scalley is steering the Utah Utes into 2026 with a defensive core that kept its best pieces while replacing nearly half the coaching staff. Kyle Whittingham's move to Michigan took several top assistants and starters with him, but Scalley — now the full-time head coach — held onto the heart of this program. Backup Byrd Ficklin also stayed, creating a stable top two in the pocket.

Scalley's staff reshapes offense with new OC

With Jason Beck moving to Ann Arbor, Utah brought in new offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven. The play-caller is tasked with keeping the same system that worked before. Scalley has already praised the Utah receiver room as the best in Salt Lake City history, thanks in part to transfer additions Kyri Shoels and Braden Pegan, who combined for 1,700 yards last year. But the offensive line is a concern. That creates early-season instability, though Utah has a history of developing talent in the trenches.

Big 12 schedule sets early tone

Utah will host Arkansas in Week 2 on September 12, an early test that could shape the rest of the season. The Nov. 7 home game against BYU is the annual Holy War and remains must-see TV. Two weeks later, the Utes head to Fort Worth to take on TCU — a brutal road assignment.

Scalley's culture and depth remain strengths

Scalley has spent the last four years under Whittingham and built a defense that's as physical as any in the conference. Even with losses like sack leader John Henry Daley and corner Smith Snowden leaving for Michigan, Utah has not lost its edge. The program's identity is built around toughness and discipline, and Scalley says that culture is unshakable.

If the Utes can maintain this physical nature and replace the offensive line, they're in a good position to return to the Big 12 title game. Scalley believes so, and with the right pieces still in place, so should everyone else.

“The way Utah develops in the trenches makes them one of the best in the nation.”
