The essentials
  • Exports surged to a record as global diesel shortages mount.
  • Europe and the Caribbean are top destinations for US diesel shipments.

Global demand pushes US diesel exports to new high

This fuel includes diesel, heating oil, and other related products. Exports have risen sharply due to severe global supply shortages. Conflicts and refinery disruptions abroad are key reasons behind this shortage. As other countries struggle to meet their needs, the US has become a critical provider.

The crisis intensified after Ukrainian military strikes damaged several Russian refineries, cutting fuel production. As a result, Russia announced a ban on most diesel exports. That move left the US as one of the few major producers with enough capacity to ship fuel abroad. European nations, Caribbean islands, and parts of South America are now relying heavily on US exports. These regions are among the biggest recipients.

Low stockpiles raise concerns ahead of winter

Domestic stockpiles of distillate fuel in the US are at their lowest level since 1996. That’s a troubling sign as the fall season nears. Demand for heating oil is expected to rise sharply when temperatures drop, both in the US and abroad. The current export surge is unlikely to ease these concerns. With fuel already in short supply, households and industries could face higher prices and tighter availability.

Export patterns shift with seasonal demand

Early in July, most US diesel shipments were directed toward the Caribbean and South America. That was likely because these regions were preparing for the September planting season. In recent weeks, however, the main export destinations have shifted to northwestern Europe. Experts say Europe is the central region in the global diesel shortage. Refinery shutdowns in the Middle East and Russia have crippled its ability to produce enough fuel to meet demand.

According to the US Energy Information Administration, exports have now exceeded 1.5 million barrels a day for five consecutive weeks. American refineries are operating at maximum capacity to keep up with the demand. Yet the gap between supply and what countries need continues to widen. The world is now heavily dependent on US production to meet its fuel needs.

“That’s the largest number on record, eclipsing the earlier high-water mark set in May.”
