Technology roll-out begins this year
In 2026, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) will start equipping 18 of its lifeboats with cutting-edge navigation systems. FLIR Marine to test thermal imaging in rescue scenarios
The RNLI is working with FLIR Marine to introduce thermal imaging cameras for its rescue missions. The pilot tests will include scenarios that mimic challenging situations like nighttime or foggy conditions. Thermal imaging has already made a difference, with 45% of RNLI operations in the past few years using the technology. When used in foggy environments, the rate of successfully locating people in distress improved by 17%.
Shannon and Atlantic 85 to be first upgraded
The RNLI's Shannon all-weather lifeboat will be the first to get a Quantum radar system by 2027. The Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboats will follow, receiving Cyclone Pro radar upgrades in 2028. In 2029, the E Class boats on the River Thames will also be retrofitted. These vessels account for 56% of the RNLI's inland rescue missions.
