Who qualifies and how the discount works
Families in the UK where the person paying the bill receives specific means-tested benefits will get the Warm Home Discount for free, as long as their name is listed on the energy bill. Benefits that make someone eligible include Housing Benefit, Pension Credit, Universal Credit, and Income-related Employment and Support Allowance. This expansion brought an extra one million families support through the discount. Currently, nearly six million households across the UK meet the criteria for the discount. In England and Wales, the eligibility conditions mirror those from the previous year, ensuring continuity. The government has asked eligible households to check their energy bill by 23 August to make sure their name appears correctly. Suppliers will use these records to automatically apply the discount.
Additional measures to lower energy costs
The Prime Minister introduced an urgent policy to eliminate VAT on domestic electricity bills starting 1 October, which will lower bills by £45 annually for each household, based on the Ofgem price cap. Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh explained that these efforts are meant to give families more breathing room in an uncertain economic environment. The government is focusing on long-term solutions to reduce energy costs and support families through rising prices. Last year’s budget reduced the average energy bill by £150, with these savings expected to persist in future billing periods.
Long-term plan to cut fuel poverty
The government has launched the Warm Homes Plan as part of a larger commitment to reduce fuel poverty and cut energy use in millions of homes. By lowering household energy use, the government aims to cut future energy expenses and improve the financial situation of families at risk of fuel poverty. Miatta Fahnbulleh emphasized that the plan will help families manage their bills while also contributing to broader economic and environmental goals.
Last winter, almost one million more families with children were supported through the expanded Warm Home Discount, as part of the government’s response to the cost-of-living crisis. This year, the government is reminding these families to confirm their eligibility in advance of the automated payment system. These efforts are designed to provide immediate financial relief to those in need, while laying the foundation for a more stable and affordable energy landscape in the future.
