A coach's journey home
Deonte Henderson is returning to his hometown of Toledo for the upcoming 2026-27 season. He has officially joined the University of Toledo women's basketball program as a graduate assistant. This marks a return to his roots after several years of professional experience in California. During his time there, Henderson worked with the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks and coached a local high school team. His journey reflects a blend of experience in professional and collegiate coaching, as well as a strong commitment to developing athletes.
Henderson spent four seasons with the Los Angeles Sparks in a variety of roles. In his first two years, he served as a practice player. He later transitioned into a basketball operations and player development intern and eventually became an assistant player development coach. His responsibilities included player development, evaluation, and crafting individualized training and warmup sessions. He helped implement development plans and also managed team attendants and prepared practice players for training. His work focused on tailoring sessions to meet specific player needs while enhancing overall performance.
While in California, Henderson took on the role of a varsity assistant coach at Redondo Union High School. Under his leadership, the team made it to the Division I playoffs in the 2024-25 season. The following year, they advanced to the CIF Southern Section open division in the 2025-26 season. During his time with the Sparks, he also trained players and coordinated team practices to help them reach peak performance levels. These experiences demonstrate his ability to lead and develop teams at multiple levels.
Analytics and education
Prior to moving back to Toledo, Henderson worked with Open Gym Premier, where he was responsible for managing live in-game stats for high school players. He also collaborated with Second Spectrum, a leading sports analytics company. In that role, he contributed to the analytics for major leagues such as the NBA, MLS, and Premier League. His background in analytics adds a modern and data-driven approach to his coaching philosophy.
Earlier this year, Henderson founded his own player development company. It is named Game Speed Development and focuses on helping athletes improve their performance. Henderson graduated in 2024 with a bachelor's degree in public relations and advertising from California State Dominguez Hills University, located in Carson, California. His professional experience and educational background highlight his commitment to excellence in both sports and academics. He now brings these qualities to the University of Toledo as he works toward his master's degree.
Henderson's return to Toledo represents more than just a career move. The university is just 10 minutes from where he grew up, making the transition deeply meaningful. He described the opportunity as “incredibly special,” emphasizing his eagerness to serve the program and support the student-athletes who will be part of the team. This homecoming underscores his personal connection to the program and his belief in its potential to grow and succeed.
Welcome to the family
Head Coach Ginny Boggess has extended a warm welcome to Henderson. She praised his enthusiasm, experience, and ability to support student-athletes both in training and in life beyond the court. Boggess believes Henderson's dedication and leadership will make a positive impact on the program. Henderson, along with his wife Tori, brings two daughters—Soraya and Phoenix—into the Toledo community, marking their arrival as an important new chapter for the family. Their presence enriches the program and the local community.
Henderson expressed his excitement about the opportunity to work with Coach Boggess and the women's basketball program. He hopes to use his expertise to help the team reach high levels of success. For him, this move feels like a full-circle moment. He looks forward to working closely with the athletes and contributing to the growth and development of the program at the University of Toledo. His return to Toledo is both a personal and professional milestone, aligning his career goals with his roots.
