Pearsall's injury opens a door
An injury to Ricky Pearsall's posterior cruciate ligament during training has thrown the San Francisco 49ers' plans into uncertainty. The wide receiver, already facing early-season questions about his durability, is now out of action, prompting the 49ers to consider their options at the position. With Pearsall sidelined, former Pro Bowler T.J. Houshmandzadeh has called on the team to bring back Deebo Samuel, a high-profile free agent who could help cover the gap left by Pearsall's absence.
A proven option
Houshmandzadeh wasted no time sharing his thoughts on the

podcast, urging the 49ers to bring back Samuel over the injury-prone Pearsall. “I can’t count on Ricky Pearsall,” he said. You’re young! You need to be out there every day so we can see what you're capable of.”
Samuel, who spent his first three seasons with the 49ers, had a career year in 2021. That season, he tallied 1,405 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 77 catches, while also adding 365 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. He even threw for a passing touchdown, earning a Pro Bowl selection and First-team All-Pro honors. Samuel's impact as a playmaker in multiple roles made him one of the most dynamic players in the league.
Last season with the Washington Commanders, Samuel still managed 727 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 72 receptions. Though not as productive as his peak, his PFN Wide Receiver Impact score of 77.0 ranked him 26th in the NFL, showcasing that he can still be a reliable contributor.
49ers continue to bolster their roster
While the 49ers remain interested in bringing Samuel back, they've also made other moves to strengthen their receiving corps. The team signed Christian Kirk and Mike Evans in free agency and selected De'Zhaun Stribling with the No. However, Kirk has dealt with a calf injury and missed the most recent training camp session.
Pearsall, who suffered a PCL injury in a Week 4 loss to the Jaguars last year, missed the next six games and was limited in four others due to knee and ankle issues. His struggles have left some wondering if he can be trusted to stay on the field. Houshmandzadeh made it clear that he sees Samuel as the better long-term option.
With Pearsall struggling and Kirk sidelined, the 49ers may be forced to turn back to Samuel. His combination of production and versatility could provide the stability the team needs. If they're looking for someone proven, Samuel might just be the name they're looking for. Additionally, Samuel is now officially signing with the 49ers on a one-year deal, a move influenced in part by Pearsall's current knee swelling and history of injuries. One influencer highlighted that Pearsall's injury made the decision “obvious.” This return is seen as a crucial step for the 49ers, as they face strong competition in the NFC West, including teams with elite receivers like the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams. Samuel’s return not only bolsters the offense but could also add an important return threat on special teams, a role he excelled in with the 49ers.
Although Samuel’s 2024 season with the Commanders was underwhelming compared to his peak, his ability to contribute across the field and impact games in multiple ways remains valuable. Influencers have already pointed out that Samuel could bring back the “YAC glory days” that helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl in past seasons. His return is especially timely as the 49ers head into a season where they'll need all the firepower they can muster against top-tier teams like the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.
