From IPL success to Test challenges
Fleming signed a four-year contract, which will keep him in the role until September 2030. This decision also marks a reunion with Joe Root, the newly reinstated England Test captain, who first stepped down from the role in 2022 and is now returning to lead the team on a full-time basis.
Fleming, who is 50 years old, recently concluded an 18-year-long coaching partnership with the Chennai Super Kings, one of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League. During his time with CSK, he guided the team to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 victories. His track record at the helm of this franchise has positioned him among the most accomplished head coaches in the history of the IPL.
However, Fleming will not be immediately present with the England squad. Marcus Trescothick, who has considerable experience in English domestic cricket, will handle the interim coaching responsibilities during the upcoming three-Test series against Pakistan, which starts on August 19. Fleming is expected to join the team later in the year, as he begins preparations for a critical series against South Africa in December.
A record built on white-ball formats
Fleming launched his coaching career in 2009, and his work quickly earned him recognition as one of the most effective minds in franchise cricket. His partnership with MS Dhoni at CSK became the cornerstone of his coaching legacy, as they secured IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023. Over the course of 18 years, he brought his team to ten finals, a feat that makes him one of the most decorated coaches in IPL history.
Beyond the IPL, Fleming also had a significant impact in other T20 leagues around the world. In the U.S., he worked with the Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket. Additionally, in 2017, he briefly coached Rising Pune Supergiant to the final of the IPL during CSK's suspension period.
Red-ball inexperience raises questions
The move from the fast-paced environment of T20 cricket to the slower, strategic nature of Test matches is a big challenge. Fleming has not had any direct involvement in red-ball coaching since he retired from playing in 2009. All of his coaching experiences over the past 18 years have been in T20 leagues.
This lack of experience in Test cricket could be a concern. Playing red-ball cricket over five days requires a completely different mindset—managing bowler loads across long sessions, building patience during innings, and adapting to the gradual change of the pitch. These skills are developed through years of exposure to first-class cricket, not through the high-intensity, short-form competitions in which Fleming has excelled.
While England is placing its trust in Fleming’s ability to manage players and develop smart tactics, both of which were evident in his T20 successes, any early struggles by the Test team under his leadership will likely bring his inexperience to the forefront. Critics are already questioning whether he can bridge the gap between his franchise experience and the demands of Test cricket at the highest level. Time will tell if this gamble pays off.
Root, who was reappointed captain after a four-year hiatus, acknowledged the importance of Fleming’s appointment in his decision to return. “He’s got a wealth of experience and done some amazing things as a player and a coach,” Root said, expressing excitement about the partnership. “I hope we can build something pretty special together.” Root also emphasized the need for England to play “smarter” Test cricket under Fleming. “We’ve spoken briefly but he was a big reason why I wanted to do it,” he added, referring to the new approach. “The wrong thing to do would be to rip everything up that we’ve done over the last four years. There’s so much good stuff that Ben and Brendon did. To think that we have to start all over again would be wrong but there are certain areas we want to sharpen up a little bit and become a bit sterner with.”
