White’s career with the Stars traces back to the 2005-06 season, when he joined the Iowa Stars, which at the time was Dallas' ECHL affiliate. Over the course of nearly twenty years, he worked his way up the ranks, eventually being named assistant general manager in 2016-17.
According to Jeff Marek, a noted insider on The Sheet podcast, White is now a top candidate for the Detroit Red Wings' GM job. The organization is currently in the process of reorganizing its leadership structure, and White's extensive background has positioned him as a serious contender for the role.
White has already made headlines in three other GM searches this summer, including Toronto, Vancouver, and Nashville. In the Toronto Maple Leafs' competition, he was at one point considered the favorite, but the job ultimately went to John Chyka. His repeated appearances in these high-profile discussions indicate that his time as a head GM could soon arrive.

White's journey started as a coach at Michigan Tech from 1994 to 1999 before he moved into the ECHL as a head coach and later transitioned into management. After joining the Stars organization in 2005, he remained with the team through major changes, including a rebranding and relocation, and was elevated to director of hockey operations in 2013-14.
The repeated near-misses in GM races this summer have undoubtedly been difficult for White, who has spent over 20 years building his reputation within one organization.
