From extended leave to dismissal
Alex Williamson’s tenure as chief executive of Scottish Rugby has ended abruptly following the completion of an independent investigation into his conduct. Williamson, who began his role at Murrayfield in early 2025, had been placed on an extended leave of absence in late May without public explanation. Today, the board of Scottish Rugby Limited has confirmed his dismissal, stating that his actions did not align with the expectations and standards expected by the organisation.
Recruitment setbacks compound leadership uncertainty
Williamson’s departure comes at a time of heightened uncertainty for Scottish Rugby’s leadership. His hiring followed an earlier failed attempt to recruit Mark Darbon to replace former chief executive Mark Dodson. Darbon, who had been nearly secured for the role, ultimately chose to accept a high-profile position at the R&A, the governing body of golf in the UK. This decision left the SRU in a difficult position, having already dealt with the sensitive circumstances of Dodson’s exit, which was described internally as a challenging chapter for the organisation.
Now, with Williamson no longer in the role, Scottish Rugby will have to begin the recruitment process anew. The governing body has appointed David White, the current chief financial officer, to serve as interim chief executive while they prepare to select a new permanent leader.
The board’s expectations and public image
When Williamson was hired in early 2025, he was brought in with a strong reputation from his previous roles at the House of Fraser and the Goodwood Estate. At the time, Scottish Rugby highlighted his experience in driving commercial growth and transforming established businesses, while also promoting values such as authenticity and community engagement. In a public statement, the organisation said, 'He has a proven track record of achieving commercial growth, accelerating the transformation of established businesses to achieve improved performance and, at the same time, consistently emphasising the importance of authenticity, openness and community values.'
Williamson himself had spoken about the significance of his new role, saying he looked forward to 'shaping the future of something that is about so much more than rugby.' He added that the sport’s ability to bring families together, inspire fans, and connect communities made it especially meaningful at a time when these values were increasingly important.
Despite the on-field success Scotland has seen in recent months, including a strong performance in the Six Nations and a positive summer series, the leadership changes at the top may now raise questions about the organisation’s stability. With key international matches and the upcoming World Cup in Australia on the horizon, Scottish Rugby now finds itself in a crucial period where both leadership and progress will be under close scrutiny.
