The New Orleans Saints rookie wide receiver, Brock Rechsteiner, has received a six-game suspension from the NFL. The league confirmed the penalty as a violation of the NFL-NFLPA performance-enhancing substances policy. According to league rules, a first-time violation of these policies leads to a four-game ban. However, the suspension increases to six games if there’s an attempted manipulation. The decision is a significant setback for Rechsteiner, who was not expected to make the team at this point.
Rechsteiner entered training camp as a long shot to secure a spot on the Saints' roster. He signed with New Orleans after being overlooked in the 2026 NFL Draft. Coming out of college football at Jacksonville State, Rechsteiner played three seasons, recording 629 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. He originally began his college career as a tight end before transitioning to wide receiver. His move was a strategic decision that allowed him to showcase different skills on the field.
Dane Brugler from The Athletic ranked him as the 159th-best wide receiver in his draft class. Despite his low ranking, Rechsteiner caught the attention of the Saints coaching staff during rookie minicamp. He performed well enough to earn a spot to remain with the team through the rest of the offseason. However, his chances have been severely impacted by the recent suspension.
Adding another layer to Rechsteiner's story, he is the son of WWE wrestler Scott Steiner, a Hall of Fame member inducted in 2022. Rechsteiner has already shared his interest in pursuing a career in the WWE once his football days are over. His cousin, Bronson Rechsteiner, also followed a similar path. Bronson signed with the Ravens in 2020 as an undrafted free agent but failed to make their 53-man roster. He is now known as Bron Breakker in the WWE. Rechsteiner has trained with Breakker and openly discussed his aspirations in wrestling, though he remains focused on football for now.
Rechsteiner will still be allowed to take part in training camp and the preseason games. His suspension will only start if he makes the final 53-man roster. Fortunately, the Saints have roster flexibility due to recent developments. Injuries to players like Bryan Bresee and the retirement of Ja'Lynn Polk have created available spots. This gives the Saints room to manage Rechsteiner’s situation without immediate pressure.
Rechsteiner’s journey to the NFL began as a preferred walk-on at Jacksonville State. He started from the bottom, worked his way up to become a starter, and eventually earned a scholarship. Reflecting on his journey, he said, “Now I’m here pretty much doing the same thing.” His comments highlight his perseverance and underdog mentality.
However, his odds are now even more difficult. His college numbers don't easily translate to the NFL, where expectations are much higher. While he is clearly a talented athlete, he will need to showcase consistent improvements and make a strong impression over the coming weeks. His ability to adapt and perform in high-pressure situations will be key.
If Rechsteiner manages to overcome the suspension and makes the Saints roster, it could be seen as a minor underdog story. Still, the challenges he now faces are enormous. At this stage, the odds are against him, and he will need to perform at a level far beyond what he has shown so far if he wants to earn a place on the team.
