Mumbai’s Shivaji Park was the backdrop for one of the most defining moments of Sachin Tendulkar’s early life, and it was there again recently as he stood at his late coach’s memorial. On Guru Purnima, the retired cricketing legend took to social media with a raw and heartfelt message.
Standing at the site where Ramakant Achrekar once drilled young players into world-class batters, Tendulkar shared photographs and a confession: that no matter how much time passed, he would always find himself needing to say one more thank you. Achrekar had been more than a mentor—he was a foundation.
The coach who built a legend
Achrekar’s influence on Tendulkar’s career started in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park, where the coach’s approach to discipline and precision set the groundwork for the future icon’s greatness. He demanded excellence in technique, temperament, and work ethic—values Tendulkar would carry through his entire 24-year international career.
Tendulkar has often credited his coach for shaping not just his batting, but also his mental resilience. Achrekar ensured he was ready to handle the weight of expectations long before he played his first Test, at the age of 16.
In 2024, a memorial to Achrekar was unveiled at the same park where he once roamed with a clipboard. Tendulkar attended the ceremony, paying quiet homage to a man who shaped more than just his career.
A career built on a single foundation
Tendulkar’s time on the field, from his debut in 1989 to his final innings in 2013, saw him amass 34,357 international runs and 100 centuries. But his tribute shows that the numbers, though staggering, only tell part of the story.
The final line of his message says it all: “Thank you for believing in me, guiding me, and helping me become the person I am.” It’s a reminder that behind every great career is often one person who saw greatness before the world did.
