The Danny Rumph Classic, a summer basketball tournament created in memory of a young athlete who died unexpectedly on the court, is making its return to Drexel University for the 21st time. The upcoming event will take place at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, located on the Drexel campus. It will run through a full weekend, from Aug. 6 to Aug. 10. Organizers and participants alike are excited about the return of this long-standing tradition. It brings together athletes at all levels to compete and raise awareness.
Daniel E. Rumph, the namesake of the tournament, was a promising basketball player whose life was cut short in 2005 due to a heart condition. The court where he played, once known as the Mallery Recreation Center, was renamed the Daniel E. Rumph II Recreation Center as a tribute to his memory. This space now stands as a symbol of the legacy he left behind and continues to inspire the foundation that carries his name.
Tournament’s growth and impact
Since its founding in 2005, the Rumph Classic has grown into one of the most respected summer basketball events on the East Coast. The tournament has become a major draw for professional, college, and high school athletes, all of whom have a chance to display their abilities on a national stage. Over the years, the event has helped shine a spotlight on emerging talent and given players the opportunity to network and get noticed.
The event has a history of attracting some of the biggest names in basketball. NBA players like Jayson Tatum, James Harden, Tyrese Maxey, John Wall, Lou Williams, Jalen Brunson, and Bobby Portis have all competed in the Rumph Classic in past years. With the recent attention on the Philadelphia 76ers and the team's exciting new signings, this year’s tournament is expected to draw one of the largest and most enthusiastic crowds in the event’s history.
Fundraising and community focus
All of the money raised through the Rumph Classic goes directly to the Daniel E. Rumph II Foundation, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit with a mission to promote health and safety for young athletes. This organization provides essential services, including free health screenings for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is the most common cause of sudden cardiac arrest in young people. Additionally, it funds CPR certification courses, runs youth basketball programs, and helps install AED units in local gyms and community centers.
The tournament is organized by Mike Morak and his team of volunteers. They work hard to ensure that the event runs smoothly. They also ensure it remains a mix of competition and charity. Drexel University is proud to host the Rumph Classic for the second year in a row. It continues its support for a cause that merges the spirit of basketball with a strong commitment to community health and safety.
