Cape Town is preparing for a busy weekend as two rugby matches and a major women's race bring increased traffic and road closures to the city center. The events are expected to draw large crowds and require additional planning for transportation and access.
Rugby action starts Friday night
The Freundschaftsspiel at DHL Stadium will begin on Friday, August 7 at 19:10. About 45,000 spectators are expected to attend, with gates opening at 15:00. It is the rematch of the 2024 Freedom Cup battle.
To assist attendees, the city is offering free MyCiTi shuttle buses to and from the stadium. The first bus departs from Civic Centre at 15:00, and the last return bus leaves the stadium at 22:30. Parking will be available at Hertzog Boulevard and Civic Avenue, following a first-come, first-served policy. Alternatives include the Parkalot at Jack Craig Street and the Harbour Arch at Harbour Arch Boulevard, though these options will charge fees.
10,000 runners close city streets on Sunday
On August 9, the city center will be the setting for the Totalsports Women’s Race. Over 10,000 runners will take part in the 10K and 5K events, with the 10K race starting at 08:00 and the 5K at 08:30. The route begins at City Hall and runs through Darling Street, District Six, and Gardens, ending on Grand Parade. The event is being held in celebration of National Women’s Day.
Road closures will be enforced from 04:00 to 13:00 on Sunday. Key streets affected include Darling Street, Castle Street, Hanover Street, Corporation Street, Sir Lowry Road, Buitenkant Street, Wale Street, Plein Street, Long Street, and Orange Street. Those planning to drive in the city during the early morning hours are advised to avoid these areas or to plan their routes carefully in advance.
Currie Cup ends as Stormers wrap up home season
The DHL Stormers XXIII will conclude their home season in the Carling Currie Cup with a final match against the Toyota Cheetahs at Athlone Stadium on Sunday. The game starts at 15:00, with gates opening at 13:30. Parking is available at Hickory Road in the P3, P4, and P5 zones. Tickets can be purchased online or at the P3 gate on match day.
