Reed Sheppard, Houston Rockets' third overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, is once again in the spotlight — this time as a potential player to be traded. Dan Favale of Bleacher Report recently highlighted Sheppard as someone who may change teams heading into the 2026-27 season, pointing to a crowded backcourt as a possible factor.
The Rockets signed veteran guard Marcus Smart in free agency. They are expected to bring back Fred VanVleet. He missed the full 2025-26 season due to a knee injury. With both players returning, there is growing talk that Sheppard might be moved down the depth chart or dealt. Coach Ime Udoka might prioritize the two more experienced guards.
Last season, Sheppard played over three times more minutes than he did as a rookie. He showed moments of being the kind of on-ball threat the Rockets wanted — a player who can stretch defenses and help on both ends. Yet his growth happened when VanVleet was out and before Smart signed with the team. If that context shifts, so might his place in the lineup.
