Rocket Lab (RKLB) shares surged 9.5% on Friday, outperforming the broader market. The S&P 500 gained 0.6%, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.2%. The spike was fueled by a recent successful launch and a major contract win.
Successful Launch in New Zealand
Rocket Lab completed another Electron launch from its Complex 1 site in New Zealand on Thursday evening. The mission delivered a satellite for a Japanese company that specializes in Earth imaging. This marked the 92nd Electron flight since the rocket's debut and demonstrated the reliability of the company's current workhorse system. Rocket Lab has secured 10 additional dedicated missions for the Japanese client, all scheduled to take place before 2030. The successful launch came just a day after the company announced a significant contract with the U.S. Space Force.
The new contract, valued at $397 million, involves building, launching, and operating a network of satellites designed to detect and track missiles from space. Rocket Lab was selected for the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator (SB-AMTI) program. This mission requires the company to construct and manage a constellation of flat satellites. The deal adds to Rocket Lab's growing portfolio, which already includes $816 million in funding from the U.S. Space Development Agency for a similar missile-tracking system involving 18 satellites.
The company's long-term success hinges on the development of its Neutron rocket. Neutron is designed to be a medium-lift launch vehicle, enabling Rocket Lab to directly compete with established companies like SpaceX. The U.S. Space Force contract is conditional upon the success of Neutron. While the company has made major progress in securing large contracts, it remains unprofitable. Despite the recent wins, Rocket Lab is still losing money and has a stock valuation that appears high to many observers.
However, if Rocket Lab can successfully develop its Neutron rocket and maintain its current trajectory, there is potential for further upside. The company's recent successes may signal a turning point in its operations and financial performance. Investors are watching closely to see if Rocket Lab can continue building on this momentum.
