A former basketball forward for Georgia and Clemson has joined a legal challenge against the NCAA. The lawsuit was filed on July 9. It seeks an additional season of eligibility for athletes.
RJ Godfrey and 15 other college players claim the NCAA limits games they can play within five years. They argue the organization also limits their ability to make money through name, image, and likeness rights. The group wants a court order to let them sign new scholarships and NIL deals for the 2026-27 season.
The lawsuit follows a rule change approved by the NCAA on June 23. Under the new rules, athletes get five seasons to play over five years. Redshirting is now only allowed for reasons like pregnancy, military service, or religious missions.
Players who already played four seasons, such as Godfrey, cannot get an extra year under the rule. This includes athletes who moved schools and used up their eligibility.
Godfrey started at Clemson for two seasons. He transferred to Georgia in 2024. During the 2024-25 season, he averaged 6.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game.
In 2025, Godfrey returned to Clemson. He improved to 12.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. His performance showed growth during the 2025 season.
Godfrey did not get picked in the NBA draft. He has not signed as an undrafted free agent. Many believe he needs another season to improve his chances in the next NBA draft.
If the lawsuit wins and Godfrey gets an extra year, he might transfer again. Schools like Oklahoma, Arkansas, and LSU have shown interest in bringing him into their programs.
The outcome of this lawsuit could affect future eligibility rules for college athletes. It may also impact how athletes negotiate NIL rights and scholarships.
