The pressure on Dombrowski

Right now, the rotation is the most glaring issue. Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sánchez, and Jesus Luzardo have been consistent, but the No. 5 starter role is a revolving door, with Aaron Nola’s injury-prone shoulder and the lost promise of Andrew Painter not helping the situation.
Options on the market
Among the potential trade targets, the Giants’ Robbie Ray has emerged as a possible fix. The left-hander is having a career resurgence and could plug into the second half of the Phillies’ rotation, pairing with Luzardo for much-needed depth. Ray is a rental in the final season of his $115 million deal, which makes him more affordable than some top-tier arms.
The Tigers’ Casey Mize is another name circulating in trade talks. After a slow start and a Tommy John injury, the former No. 1 pick is finally hitting his stride in 2026. Detroit is considering a deal for Mize now rather than losing him for nothing next offseason. Mize could offer the high-upside, high-risk addition that Dombrowski might target to fill that No. 5 starter role.
The Twins' Joe Ryan is the most tantalizing option. A pitcher with elite strikeout rates and a proven track record, Ryan has been among the league leaders in nearly every stat this season. But given his value and the Twins' reluctance to part with him, any trade would likely be expensive. Still, if the Phillies are serious about winning in 2026, Ryan could be the difference-maker.
The balance between risk and reward
Dombrowski faces a tough decision. Bringing in a top-tier starter like Ryan would be an all-in move, but at a price that could stretch the team’s resources thin. Alternatively, Ray or Mize could offer a cheaper, more measured upgrade that still addresses the rotation's instability.
The Phillies could also look elsewhere, such as adding a right-handed bat to the outfield or bolstering the bullpen with a high-leverage arm. However, with the current setup, the most urgent need is still starting pitching. As the deadline approaches, teams will be watching to see if Dombrowski is willing to commit the necessary assets to push this group over the top.
