Board Delays Coaching Decision
The Palmyra Area District school board held a tense meeting on Thursday, August 6, during which they postponed making a decision on the future of the high school wrestling coaching staff. During the meeting, four new members were elected to the board, and they took an extended executive session to deliberate on the program's direction. Former assistant coach Joshua Weidman, along with five members of the Cougars' wrestling team, attended the meeting. This attendance, along with the presence of several community supporters, clearly demonstrated solidarity with former wrestling coach Jonathan Regets and the coaching staff.
Rising junior Elijah Foltz, a standout wrestler for the Cougars, has been regularly attending board meetings over the past year, and he has voiced unwavering support for Regets and the coaching staff. Foltz emphasized that Regets has not only helped the team perform better but has also contributed to the personal growth of the athletes. He shared how the coaches bring the wrestlers together during summer tournaments and rides, maintaining a strong sense of team unity outside the wrestling room. This commitment to togetherness has helped the Cougars bond both as a team and as individuals.
Regets has been voluntarily organizing summer wrestling events for the athletes, keeping the team engaged and competitive during the off-season. Foltz highlighted these efforts, noting a recent dual team tournament in which Palmyra secured first place in their division. According to Foltz, these events are crucial for team morale and provide opportunities for the wrestlers to stay connected and continue developing as both athletes and teammates. The fact that these events often include local athletes from other schools further reinforces the sense of community and shared goals among young wrestlers in the area.
Despite the turmoil surrounding the coaching staff, the Cougars have remained a tightly knit group. Foltz explained that staying together during this period of uncertainty has helped the team grow as both athletes and individuals. Whether or not the same coaching staff remains in place, Foltz said the team is committed to supporting one another. He described how even small acts of solidarity, like offering a ride to a teammate, can strengthen the bonds within the team. These shared experiences, he said, are an important part of building unity and trust among team members.
The next meeting of the Palmyra District board is scheduled for August 20. Foltz said the Cougars will continue to work hard, both inside and outside the wrestling room, regardless of the outcome of the meeting. The team's resilience and commitment to one another, he added, will ensure that they continue to grow and succeed, regardless of any changes in coaching staff. As the board finalizes its decision, the wrestlers remain focused on their shared goals and the positive impact their coaches—past and present—have had on their development.
