Zohran Mamdani, New York City's mayor, said Tuesday he couldn't enforce an ICC arrest order for Benjamin Netanyahu. But he urged U.S. officials to act if the Israeli leader visits later this year. In a social media post, Mamdani labeled Netanyahu a 'war criminal' and 'architect of genocide' against Palestinians.
His team reviewed all possible legal options for New York City to carry out the ICC warrant. They found no local power to act. 'We lack the authority,' Mamdani said. 'But the federal government can. They must join the ICC and enforce this order.'
The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in 2024. The U.S. does not recognize the court and refuses to join it. Mamdani also made clear that Netanyahu 'is not welcome in New York City,' adding that no war criminal should be allowed in the city.
Mamdani’s comments sparked backlash, especially from Donald Trump. Trump said on social media Netanyahu 'will not be arrested' in America. He claimed Iran was responsible for global violence and suggested those leaders should be arrested instead. Netanyahu said he had 'no concerns' about the mayor's words.
Netanyahu plans to visit New York in September for the UN General Assembly. Mamdani said last week he was checking if he could arrest him during the trip. He had promised this during his mayoral campaign. 'Netanyahu belongs in The Hague,' he said, pointing to where the ICC is located.
