The essentials
  • Digital game sales on Nintendo Switch now account for over 60% of total software sales.
  • Digital software revenue nearly doubled from ¥69.8 billion to ¥132.7 billion in consecutive quarters.
  • Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream and Pokopia drove the company's software performance.

The rise of digital gaming on Nintendo platforms

Nintendo is experiencing a shift in how its games are bought and played. More than 60% of software sold on the Switch comes through digital channels. As the gaming industry leans into digital, Nintendo is following suit.

In the first quarter of FY27, digital sales accounted for 61.5% of the company’s software sales. That’s up from 59.3% in the previous quarter. The rise is clear, even if it doesn’t seem huge at first glance.

Numbers behind the change

The actual cash from these sales nearly doubled between the two quarters. Digital sales jumped from ¥69.8 billion to ¥132.7 billion. That’s an increase of about 90%.

Nintendo said the change was driven by downloadable versions of games and a weaker yen, which made prices more attractive. The company still supports physical copies, but the numbers tell a different story.

Top titles and what they mean

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream sold over 8 million units by August 5, 2026. Pokopia became the best-selling Pokémon spin-off ever. These games helped push the company forward in this new era.

While Nintendo has not abandoned physical games, the trend is clear. Players are buying more software online. As Sony and Xbox prepare to move away from discs, Nintendo may soon have to keep up.

“Nintendo attributed the year-on-year increase to several factors, including stronger sales of downloadable versions of packaged software, as well as the depreciation of the Japanese yen.”
What's next

If the trend continues, Nintendo may need to reconsider its stance on physical media. The company's future strategy will depend on how the market reacts to digital-only models.
