For years, Chrome users had to switch browsers to enjoy 4K streaming, but that is about to change. A recent update from Netflix now lets Windows users watch Ultra HD content directly in Chrome, removing the need to switch to Microsoft Edge.
Hardware still matters — a lot
Getting 4K streaming in Chrome is not automatic. Users need to meet specific hardware requirements. A Windows 11 PC with up-to-date software is required, along with Netflix’s Premium plan that grants access to Ultra HD content.
Your display also must support 4K resolution at 60Hz and be compatible with HDCP 2.2 copy protection. If your setup doesn’t meet this, the 4K experience won’t work, no matter how many updates you install.
Graphics or processing hardware also plays a major role. Approved components include the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 or newer, AMD Radeon RX 400-series and later models, or compatible Intel and AMD processors.
In some cases, users might need to install Microsoft’s HEVC Video Extensions to get the 4K experience working. These requirements ensure that the system meets the standards Netflix sets for Ultra HD playback.
Mac users still face a barrier
Unfortunately, the change is only available to Windows users. For Mac users, Chrome remains restricted to 1080p resolution. To watch 4K Netflix streams on macOS, users must switch to Safari, regardless of the capabilities of their display or processor.
This limitation highlights a key difference in how Netflix handles browser-specific streaming on Windows and macOS systems. Even with a 4K-ready Mac, Chrome users can’t access the highest quality content without using Safari.
Despite these limitations, the update is a step forward for Windows Chrome users. Those paying for a Premium plan can now watch movies and shows in the best quality directly in the browser they prefer. There’s no need to change browsers or deal with compatibility issues just to enjoy 4K streaming.
The change does not reduce the value of the Premium plan. The Ultra HD experience remains the same — it’s just now more accessible for users who prefer Chrome. Netflix remains committed to delivering quality, even as it continues to refine browser support for its services.
Netflix enabled this feature quietly, without a formal announcement, so availability may vary by account and setup. The feature is currently limited to Windows 11, with Chrome on macOS still capped at 1080p. Netflix has not published official documentation or indicated if 4K Chrome playback will expand to macOS.
