The essentials
  • Moss raised €30 million in a new round led by Portage and involving Cherry Ventures.
  • Annual recurring sales have grown twenty-fold since 2022 to €70 million.
  • The company is focusing on AI to automate finance processes and detect anomalies.

Moss, a Berlin-based fintech company, has reached a valuation of one billion euros, marking a major milestone for the business, according to Handelsblatt. To support its expansion and enhance artificial intelligence capabilities, the company successfully secured a new round of funding amounting to €30 million. Ante Spittler, Moss's co-founder and CEO, highlighted that the additional funds will empower the fintech to expand further and integrate more AI technology into its operations.

Since its establishment in 2019, Moss has catered to medium-sized businesses with its offerings of corporate credit cards and a digital platform for expense management. Over time, the company has significantly adopted artificial intelligence solutions across its operations. The latest funding round was led by Portage, the investment division of Sagard, a renowned asset manager specializing in the fintech sector. Cherry Ventures, a previous investor, is also participating in the round. Moss has previously attracted backing from prominent venture capital firms such as Valar Ventures, Tiger Global, and GFC.

Spittler expressed that this achievement reflects the efforts of the team over the past seven years. Moss navigated a challenging phase in 2021 when it shifted its focus from aggressive growth to operational efficiency and had to implement layoffs. The company managed to raise sufficient funds before the start-up financing market faced a downturn in late 2022, allowing it to maintain operations until a planned break-even point in 2027.

Strong sales and future plans

The valuation increase is largely driven by Moss's impressive sales growth. Since the start of 2022, its annual recurring sales have surged twenty-fold to reach €70 million, with an average annual growth rate of 65 percent. The company currently employs around 300 people. Spittler mentioned that while an initial public offering (IPO) is a potential future option, the company is not under pressure to pursue it immediately. To meet the requirement for inclusion in a selection index after an IPO, Moss would need to achieve a turnover exceeding €500 million, a target that likely remains several years away.

Looking ahead, Moss intends to expand into two additional European countries in the upcoming year. While the company primarily targets firms with fewer than 1,000 employees, its services are now also in use by larger enterprises like Flink, Gusto, and Auto1. Spittler noted that both an acquisition and an IPO are equally viable exit strategies for Moss, depending on future developments and market conditions.

AI integration in finance processes

Moss is actively integrating AI agents into its platform to automate manual tasks in finance departments. These agents create decision templates that users can approve as they see fit, streamlining processes and enhancing efficiency. Spittler explained that the AI agents are designed to provide flexibility to finance teams, enabling them to understand the outcomes and approve specific steps according to their preferences.

The AI agents also play a critical role in monitoring activities for unusual events. For example, if an expense for an internal event contradicts the company's established guidelines, the AI system triggers an alert to flag the issue. Moss is gradually rolling out an AI-powered accounting platform, with AI agents connecting through interfaces to key data sources such as accounting software, bank accounts, and goods movement records. This system checks whether invoices and account transactions align, improving transparency and control over financial processes.

“The new financing round of 30 million euros gives us additional scope for further investments, especially for the increased use of artificial intelligence.”
