Tech giants face new financial strain
According to Moody's Ratings, the rapid development of artificial intelligence infrastructure at a scale of trillions of dollars annually is introducing new financial challenges for major tech companies. Hyperscalers such as Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and others are investing heavily in physical assets like data centers, which is reducing their free cash flow and increasing the risk on their balance sheets.
In the past, these companies relied on lightweight models based on software, intellectual property, and scalable cloud services, which required minimal capital. Now, the demand for generative AI requires significant investment in expensive hardware and energy-intensive systems. To fund their ambitions, firms are increasing their use of debt, selling equity, and entering into long-term leases. This trend is pushing even the wealthiest companies to assume more financial risk.
Capital spending is at record levels
This is a significant break from the traditional Silicon Valley model, where software-driven businesses consistently delivered high margins and strong financials. In contrast, building out AI infrastructure involves large upfront costs and long-term commitments. As a result, companies must now manage the complexities of financing large-scale physical operations, including server warehouses and data centers.
Tech firms are increasingly relying on financial markets to support these efforts. The combined direct debt among the six major hyperscalers is approaching $460 billion. Alphabet, for instance, recently secured $85 billion through equity offerings. Even though leasing strategies are being used to avoid direct ownership, the strain on balance sheets remains evident.
Leases mask true debt risk
Moody's has highlighted how lease commitments for AI infrastructure are now exceeding $1.2 trillion. A substantial portion — over $820 billion — is attributed to data centers that are still in the planning or construction phase. While these obligations are not classified as direct debt, the ratings agency considers them as equivalent to debt in terms of future financial implications. Companies will be required to make significant rent payments over time, regardless of the economic environment.
The six hyperscalers under scrutiny by Moody's include Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Oracle, and CoreWeave. While Microsoft and Alphabet maintain robust balance sheets, Oracle and CoreWeave are under greater financial stress. Oracle is rated Baa2 with a negative outlook, indicating it is only two steps above junk status. CoreWeave operates in high-yield markets with a Ba3 rating and depends on private debt structures to acquire the necessary hardware.
The AI boom has also created a self-reinforcing ecosystem, according to Moody's. Major tech companies are making substantial investments in pre-IPO AI startups such as OpenAI and Anthropic. These startups, in turn, rely heavily on cloud services provided by the same hyperscalers. This circular relationship increases systemic risk, as companies become more dependent on the success of shared AI customers and similar economic assumptions.
Despite these challenges, the demand for AI computing remains strong, and cloud services continue to expand. Long-term contracts with major clients provide a stable revenue stream that helps mitigate some of the financial pressure. These factors contribute to the overall strength of the credit profiles of these companies, even as their spending intensifies.
Still, Moody's warns that the financial landscape of the tech industry is experiencing a transformation unlike anything seen during the cloud computing era. Investors must pay closer attention to whether these companies can generate sufficient returns on their AI investments. The rapid expansion into physical infrastructure marks a significant shift, and it may carry greater risks moving forward.
