The 21-year-old has shown consistent improvement, starting with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Mackenzie McDonald in his opening match at the 2026 Mubadala DC Open. His second-round victory over Adrian Mannarino, a 6-4, 7-6(3) decision, confirmed his strong form as he moves into the quarterfinals. This sets up a major test against third-seeded Taylor Fritz, who Michelsen is eager to face again.
Michelsen’s encounter with Mannarino was not without its challenges. A spectator in the crowd became visibly vocal throughout the match, repeatedly heckling the young American. After securing the win, Michelsen turned toward the fan and shot back, “Hey, I’m tougher than you! I’m tougher than you!” The moment drew attention when the chair umpire inquired about it. Michelsen explained that the fan had been chirping during the match and that he felt it was fair to respond. It’s great.

Michelsen elaborated on why he believes playing against a training partner can be an advantage. Usually, when you practice with someone and you play them in a match, it favors the one that is a little worse because you kind of know what’s coming a bit.” With that in mind, Michelsen appears to be in a strong position as he eyes another victory on the court in Washington, D.C.
