Practice injury changes plans
A hamstring injury sustained during Monday's training session has thrown a wrench into the 49ers' safety plans. Malik Mustapha, a key figure in the secondary rotation, was paired with second-year safety Marques Sigle at strong safety next to Ji'Ayir Brown during the early days of camp. Now, the team must reassess its strategy as it's unclear how long Mustapha will be sidelined. A minor strain may keep him out for a few practices, while a more serious issue could lead to his absence for the entire preseason.
Opportunity for Sigle
With Mustapha sidelined, Sigle gets the chance to showcase his abilities with the first-team defense. A strong performance could make Sigle a permanent fixture in the starting lineup. If he delivers, he may lock down one of the two starting safety spots. However, any missteps could diminish his chances of earning that starting role when the season begins in 2026.
A familiar challenge for Sigle
This marks the second opportunity for Sigle to stake his claim for a starting spot. As a fifth-round pick from Kansas State, he started 15 games last year, earning seven starts and recording 52 tackles, one tackle for loss, and two pass breakups. Meanwhile, Mustapha, a more established presence, started 10 of 12 games he played in, tallying 76 tackles, three tackles for loss, three pass breakups, and an interception. Sigle now has a rare chance to prove himself unimpeded, with Mustapha's absence opening the door for him to make a lasting impression.
