The Three-Day Surge and the Fed's Handoff

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index has posted three straight daily gains, rising nearly 16 points in that stretch. By the time trading closed on Tuesday, it was at 1,603.15, slightly over the 1,600-point mark. With buoyant performance on Wall Street and Federal Reserve signals suggesting a potential slow easing of interest rates, the index appears well poised for further gains. On Tuesday, the upward momentum came from plantations, telecom companies, and industrial stocks, even though the financials dragged down. Celcomdigi climbed 0.85%, and Petronas Dagangan soared 9.64%, the most notable rise of the day.

On the U.S. side, the main stock benchmarks hit record levels. The S&P 500 climbed 0.57%, the Dow rose 0.28%, and the Nasdaq added 0.63%. These gains were fueled by minutes from the Fed's latest monetary meeting that hinted at a possible path to rate cuts, but only if economic data continue to align with expectations.

The word "gradually" stands out in the Fed's messaging. The central bank is aiming to prevent an overreaction in the market until it sees further confirmation that the economy remains on solid ground. Asian investors are taking this as a cautious signal to build some long positions, but not to aggressively push forward.

Crude oil prices dropped on Tuesday as reports indicated Israel and Hezbollah are nearing a potential ceasefire agreement in the coming days. West Texas Intermediate crude for January delivery closed at $68.77, down $0.17. Energy stocks showed a mix of results in the KLSE. YTL Corporation climbed 5.41%, and YTL Power rose 4.58%, while Petronas Chemicals and Nestle Malaysia both declined.

Public Bank declined 0.45%, yet RHB Bank and IOI Corporation recorded small advances. Genting Malaysia and Sime Darby were among the top performers of the day, with increases of 2.38% and 3.57%, respectively. Meanwhile, several other stocks displayed a range of results, including a 9.64% rise for Petronas Dagangan and a 3.00% gain for IHH Healthcare, illustrating a broad mix of outcomes across the market.
